About DAAs
National Institute of Technology Calicut would like to recognize the professional achievements and contributions of its alumni through the Distinguished Alumni Award (DAA) every year, on Foundation Day (1st September). The DAA award of the following categories recognizes and celebrates outstanding alumni who have demonstrated sustained excellence in their personal and professional achievements, are leaders in their field or have made a substantial impact on society.
Eligibility
An individual, to be considered for this Distinguished Alumni Award, should have made significant contributions recognized widely under the category concerned. A person who has received any degree from the Institute is eligible to be considered for Distinguished Alumni Awards. Nominations for posthumous award will not be considered. An alumnus/alumna, who is an employee of NIT Calicut, shall not be eligible for the award during his/her service period except when he/she has accomplished truly outstanding achievement of the highest order, recognized widely.

Category A - Technology Innovation Excellence
Innovations in application of technology, design & development achievements, research achievements in industry/architecture, awards & recognition (external & internal), technical leadership activities & positions, fellowships in professional organizations, patents & publications, industry standards activities, collaborations with academia, community service
Category B - Academic Excellence
Academic achievements and honors, intellectual contributions to the field of expertise, academic research & pioneering work, journal papers & citation indices, conference papers, books and book chapters, journal editorship and editorial board membership, number of Ph.D. scholars guided, externally sponsored projects executed, intellectual property rights, institution development, visiting professorships, fellowships in professional associations, student mentoring & welfare activities, professional outreach activities, awards & recognition
Category C - Managerial Excellence
Exceptional management skills, leadership position in companies, team leadership in setting up new enterprises, awards & recognition, board memberships, fellowships in professional bodies, media testimonials, global stature, collaborations with academia, community service& social outreach, team leadership in setting up new enterprises, mentoring track-record
Category D - Entrepreneurial Excellence
Founded or co-founded one or more commercially viable companies, Significant entrepreneurial skills & accomplishments, creation of support structure for entrepreneurs, success of start-ups in establishing market presence, scale of operation & reach to society, awards & recognition, community service & social outreach, coaching & advisory activities
Category E - Excellence in Public Services and other walks of Life
Significant accomplishments in various fields—service to society, excellence in public administration, Defense and Civil services, notable achievements in media, journalism, entertainment and fine arts, leadership and innovation, awards & recognition , community service & social outreach, the scale of impact of contributions.
Category F - Excellence in Institutional Development and Alma mater services
This award recognizes and celebrates Alumni who significantly contributed towards the development of the Institute and it’s infrastructure and offers distinguished services towards the advancement of Alma mater and welfare of the students, faculty, staff, and alumni community.
Category G - Emerging Alumni Leader Award
This award recognizes and celebrates young alumni who graduated from NIT Calicut in the last 20 years and are making significant contributions in advancing their field, demonstrate the tangible impact of their work, innovators, game-changers, and promising future leaders.
Nominations/ Applications
Self-Applications/Nominations by fellow Alumni can be made online in multiple categories with an endorsement by at least two persons among the following. There should be separate applications/nominations for each category of DAA.
- Past Distinguished Alumni Awardees
- Present and former faculty members of the Institute except faculty involved in the screening and selection process
- Officer Bearers (President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer) and former Office Bearers (former President, former Vice-President, former Secretary, former Treasurer) of NITCAA and Alumni Chapters across the globe.
The call for DAA nominations/applications will be opened on the NITC website and circulated through social media handles of the institute and Alumni chapters each year. Any alumni can directly apply or nominate fellow alumnus/alumna with two endorsements as mentioned above. The applications/nominations will be closed by the 16th of July for DAA 2024.
The applications/nominations will have three years of validity.
Applications/Nominations in the prescribed application format could be submitted digitally via this web portal by 30th June 2024 .
It will not be possible to consider applications/nominations received after the due date (30th June 2024) for the current year. However, those may be carried forward for consideration in the future.

DAA Selection Process
Preliminary scrutiny of the nominations received will be performed by the Office of Dean International, Alumni and Corporate Relations (IACR). The nominations shall then be shortlisted by a Screening Committee (SC) chaired by the Dean (IACR). Shortlisted nominations shall be peer-reviewed by separate panels constituted for each category. Based on the recommendations of the peer reviewers, the Screening Committee will make a recommendation for consideration of the Standing Committee, which generally comprises the Director/Deputy Director as the Chairman (Ex officio), Dean (IACR) (Ex officio) and 2 (two) external professionals of eminence. The Standing Committee will make final recommendations to the Institute Senate for approval.
The following, among possible other criteria, shall be considered while assessing the applications/nominations:
- Positions held
- Contributions to his/her profession and the field
- Awards and Honours received
- Association with the Institute and contributions
- Contribution to the growth and development of the country/society and the impact
The judging committee will decide the DAA with successes in career and contributions widely acknowledged considering criteria such as holding the top position of organizations at CXO level/ A+ designations, Eminent Academics with excellence in teaching and research, an entrepreneur with societal impact and turnover, etc. Contributions to the development of alma mater in any form by time/fund/expertise will also be considered. The judges will select the winner(s) for each category, and their decision will be final. No communications will be entertained in this regard from the applicants/nominators. If there are no applicants/nominees of sufficient merit in any or all of the categories in any year, the jury may choose not to make an award in any or all of the categories.
The process of selection may change and will be updated accordingly.
Honouring the DAA
The awardees will be intimated by an email , and the list of awardees will be published on the institute website, all official social media handles of the institute, the NITCAA web portal , and the alumni newsletter to congratulate the winners. The award function is expected to be held on Foundation Day (1st September). Local travel and boarding/lodging of the awardees will be arranged by the Alumni office.On Foundation Day, a personal interview of the awardees by students will be arranged for publication in the Student Magazine.
